Julius Jacobus van de Sande Bakhuyzen was a student of his father Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen. He mainly focused on painting landscapes, in which trees often take a prominent place.

This painting, a small oil on panel, is a perfect example of this. The trees are painted in a very precise and detailed manner. By working with different color shades for the leaves, he also managed to create a very nice, refined depth.

The composition is also well balanced. The sightlines ensure that the painting attracts attention in a pleasant, active way.

Julius is regarded as a prominent representative of the Hague School. He was a member of Art et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. His work can be seen at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and at the Haags Gemeentemuseum.
